Basic Purpose

Positions in this job family are assigned responsibilities involving instruction of individuals and groups in a variety of arts and crafts mediums.  Employees will train children and adults in a state institution or facility, observing students and tailoring instruction to ability and level of progress.

Typical Functions

The functions within this job family will vary be level, but may include the following:

  • Plans, schedules and implements arts and crafts programs and activities.
  • Requisitions supplies and materials; maintains tools and ensures classroom and equipment are in good repair and in a clean and orderly condition.
  • Observes students; prepares reports on their progress and other classroom activities; maintains attendance records.

Level Descriptors

The Arts and Crafts Instructor job family consists of two levels which are distinguished by the complexity of assignments, the level of expertise required to perform the duties assigned, and the responsibility assigned for providing leadership to others.

LEVEL I:                                   Code:  Z17A                                         Salary Band:  G

This is the career level of this job family, where employees are assigned responsibility for supervising and instructing individual students, groups or classes of students in one or more arts and crafts mediums.  These mediums include weaving, rug making, needlework, ceramics, clay modeling, painting, wood, leather, metal and papier-mache.  Employees will observe students and prepare reports of progress and class activities.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required at this level include knowledge of arts and crafts; of materials, supplies and equipment associated with various arts and crafts; and of methods and techniques of group and individual instruction.  Ability is required to express ideas clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; to adapt therapy techniques to the individual student; and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of two years experience in occupational therapy, recreational therapy, or arts and crafts instruction OR an equivalent combination of education and experience, substituting one college level course in art, education, recreation or occupational therapy for each six months of the required experience.

LEVEL II:                                  Code:  Z17B                                         Salary Band:  I

This is the leadership level of this job family, where employees are assigned responsibility for directing, planning and supervising an arts and crafts program.  This includes training instructors and consulting with them regarding student progress, screening and evaluating capabilities of students for placement in the program, recommending treatment and placement in the program and preparing diagnostic and progress reports for classes and individual students.  Positions are assigned responsibility for the supervision of Arts and Crafts Instructors, including reviewing and assigning work, providing training and evaluating performance. Some positions may provide direct supervision which includes responsibilities for employee development, approving leave and initiating disciplinary actions, as well as performing related administrative functions.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required at this level include those identified in Level I plus additional knowledge of the principles of arts and crafts therapy; of applicable health and safety regulations; and of modern teaching methods.  Ability is required to plan and direct an arts and crafts program based on individual needs and capabilities of students; and to deal with potentially violent students.

Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of a bachelor’s degree in art, art education, or occupational therapy or an equivalent combination of education and experience, substituting one year of experience in arts and crafts instruction for each year of the required education.
