Duplicating Equipment Operator

Basic Purpose

Positions in this job family are assigned responsibilities related to the operation, maintenance, and repair of duplicating equipment including high speed computer operated digital duplicators associated with the reproduction of agency documents.

Typical Functions

The functions within this job family will vary by level, but may include the following.

  • Operates a variety of duplicating equipment.
  • Cleans and maintains equipment.
  • Prepares materials for the finishing and bindery process.
  • Maintains an inventory of supplies associated with the duplicating process.
  • Plans and supervises the operation of all reproduction and associated peripheral equipment in a print shop; plans and lays out work; reviews work while in progress to ensure quality.
  • Consults with division heads and other officials concerning their special needs and the availability of services.
  • Coordinates the reproduction services with other activities of the division.

Level Descriptors

The Duplicating Equipment Operator job family consists of four levels which are distinguished by the level of complexity of the specific job assignments, the extent of responsibility assigned, the level of expertise required for the completion of assigned projects, and the responsibility for the supervision of others.

LEVEL I:                                   Code:  E35A                             Salary Band:  C

This is the basic level where incumbents perform entry-level work in a training status to build their skills in the operation and maintenance of duplicating equipment.  In this role they will be assigned duplicating jobs of a simple nature such as cleaning, lubricating, and simple equipment adjustments, restocking and inventory of supplies, and other activities which require only basic knowledge and skills in the operation of duplication equipment.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities required at this level include knowledge of basic mathematics, basic grammar, spelling, and punctuation.  Ability is required to operate basic duplicating equipment and related machinery; and to comprehend written and oral communication.

Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of none.

LEVEL II:                                  Code:  E35B                             Salary Band:  D

This is the career level where employees perform a full range of assignments, varying in complexity, in the operation of various duplicating equipment. This will include set-up and operation of a full range of duplicating equipment, determining the most cost efficient method of duplicating the highest quality documents, and providing training and assistance to lower-level operators.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required at this level consist of those identified in Level I, plus knowledge of mechanical principles involved in the operation of duplicating equipment; and of various paper sizes and weights, chemicals, inks, and other supplies used in the reproduction process.  Ability is required to set up and operate a variety of reproduction machines and related equipment.

Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of one year of experience in the operation of duplicating equipment.

LEVEL III:                                 Code:  E35C                             Salary Band:  E

This is the specialist level where employees operate high speed digital duplicators.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required at this level include those identified in Level II, plus knowledge of digital duplicators; and of basic graphic art techniques.

Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of those identified at Level II plus one year of experience in the operation of digital duplicators.

LEVEL IV:                                 Code:  E35D                             Salary Band:  F

This is the leadership level where employees perform all functions of the lower levels, plus supervisory duties associated with the operation of duplicating equipment.  This will include assigning and reviewing work of subordinate personnel and performing work on the more complex equipment to complete highly technical jobs.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required at this level include those identified in Level II, plus knowledge of supervisory principles and practices.  Ability is required to plan, organize, and coordinate different stages of work in a reproduction operation; to make cost estimates of jobs; and to direct and/or conduct several projects simultaneously.

Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of four years of experience in printing or reproduction operations.

Selective Qualifications

Some agencies may require experience in operating, printing, graphic reproductions, and photographic equipment on a specific type of duplicating equipment.
