Basic Purpose

Positions in this job family are involved in planning, organizing, coordinating and supervising a comprehensive safety, security and transportation program for a state hospital, school, facility or institution.

Typical Functions

  • Plans, organizes, develops and implements safety and security programs for a hospital, school, facility or institution.
  • Develops and maintains cooperative relationships with state and local police officials, and with groups recruited to aid in the return of runaways and missing children.
  • Trains facility personnel in modern safety and security techniques.
  • Inspects buildings, grounds, and equipment to ensure compliance with safety and security regulations.
  • Attends state office staff meetings to present progress report and needs assessments for the program.
  • Investigates security incidents and accidents at the facility.

This job family consists of only one level and employees are responsible for performing all functions involving planning, organizing, coordinating and supervising a 24-hour transportation, safety, and security program.  In this role, they will provide appropriate transportation methods for dependent, delinquent or handicapped children, establish volunteer groups to aid in the return of runaways and missing children, conduct regular safety and security training sessions for facility personnel, and serve on safety committees and study groups.  Positions are assigned responsibility for the supervision of transportation, safety and security personnel at the facility, including assigning and reviewing work, training and performance evaluation.  Some positions will provide direct supervision which includes additional responsibility for employee development, approving leave and initiating disciplinary actions, as well as performing related administrative functions.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required include knowledge of established safety standards, practices, procedures and techniques; of establishing and conducting training programs; of report writing; and of supervisory principles and practices.  Ability is required to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; to express ideas clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; and to coordinate a comprehensive transportation system.

Education and Experience requirements consist of a bachelor’s degree in safety, safety education, criminal justice administration, criminology, law enforcement or a closely related field and two years of experience in security and/or safety work, including one year in a supervisory capacity; or an equivalent combination of education and experience, substituting one year of qualifying experience for each year of the required bachelor’s degree.

NOTE:  There will be no substitution allowed for the required supervisory experience.
